Amazon’s Bezos Apologizes For Orwell Misadventure
Jonathan | July 23, 2009 | 8:21 pmAmazon’s Jeff Bezos has apologized for the remote deletions of customer’s purchased materials. Those included George Orwell’s 1984 and Animal Farm. Here is his statement:
This is an apology for the way we previously handled illegally sold copies of 1984 and other novels on Kindle. Our “solution” to the problem was stupid, thoughtless, and painfully out of line with our principles. It is wholly self-inflicted, and we deserve the criticism we’ve received. We will use the scar tissue from this painful mistake to help make better decisions going forward, ones that match our mission.
While he is still a little vague regarding how Amazon would have done the current situation different, it is good that Amazon sees the harm they’ve done to themselves. I would still like to see them explicitly explain their policies from here on.
